Why Grade Matters

Ethiopian coffee is officially graded from 1 to 9, by defect count and cup quality. Grade 1–2 is certified specialty coffee. Grade 5–9 is commercial grade — and that is what most coffee sold in Bangladesh actually is.

• Grade 1–2 · Specialty — the top tier. This is Gera.
• Grade 3–4 · Premium commercial — decent, rarely sold here.
• Grade 5–9 · Commercial — most coffee on shelves in Bangladesh, including well-known brands.

Gera is Grade 2 single-origin Ethiopian Arabica — a grade most brands in this market have never offered. That is the difference you taste, and the reason it costs more.
